My Mercurial Friend Zeitgeist
(8/11/2025)
You know the one.
It’s everywhere, in everything, in supreme concurrency. It sighs like a cosmic wind through the ethers of reality. It sings, though a different symphony than that of the music of the Spheres. It also farts often.
Over there, Deutschlanders have given it a curious name, a fusion of time and spirit. Spiritual times. “The spirit of the time”. Simpler people — or perhaps hurried ones — call it merely “the times”.
So, this friend, it has a very shifty nature. Sometimes it does good stuff, other times it summons horrible woes. Like all close — intimate even — friends, one cannot just leave it. In fact, one is incapable of doing thus. One is eternally welded to, moulded in, suffused with Zeitgeist, it being the mooching companion crashing on the sofa each night, the sofa, the hearth, the landlord, and the street to freedom outside, all at once. Synchronism at its absolute.
How then, should we treat that friend?
With awareness.
One must be cognizant and acknowledging of Zeitgeist. To study its patterns, to contemplate its flow, and to chart its empyrean vectors. To know when to journey avast its celestial ways and when to still amid a quiet lambent corner. Time is nothing, a no-thing; timing is every thing. All of it.
Picture the illustration of first edition “Time Walk” from Magic the Gathering. This is one’s relationship with Zeitgeist. Now take that extra turn.
Zeitgeist is also intimately bound with one’s noosphere. A noosphere is the realm of unmanifested potential; a virtual space of dream, desire, and destiny. It is of dual nature, possessing intrinsic and extrinsic components. The ratio is determined by one and one’s personal consciousness. Then, there is the Noosphere (grandeur-granting capital N optional), the egregor of All’s noosphere, infinitely scalar and fractal, bound only by the zoom level of system-examination.
For the purposes of this post, look shall be taken confined to the domain of Sol, and Terra in particular.
While Zeitgeist has its own agendas (note the plural), it is also readily amenable to shaping and manipulation by the Noosphere. The Noosphere, like Zeitgeist, is another protean entity, alive yet not quite reified, residing in the metaplains, its presence beginning where that of the empiric one’s discards non-compliant ethereal vistas as so much detritus. Yet the Noosphere, in turn, is shaped and manipulated by the “mundane world”, aka “everyday life”. So, it follows that one does, after all, have a say in the matter of Zeitgeist’s behavior, expressed in the continued interaction, cooperation and/or antagonism with the manifested reality of the waking world.
Consider the Disney movie “Tomorrowland”. It is the ultimate example of self-fulfilling prophecy: by staring in the mirror, one causes the mirror to stare back.
Our friend Zeitgeist is like a mirror, sometimes. Others, it is its own agent. Wisdom basks in discerning what roles Zeitgeist plays, to what degree, and in what context. Enlightened with context, one can remain on amenable terms with Zeitgeist, even when one’s mercurial friend insists on crapping the floor, smearing the walls with the result, and setting the roof on fire. In those circumstances, smile, acknowledge the demise of the stage, and take a stroll outside. Maybe another, better abode awaits new residents down the road. Or perhaps the skies and stars are prettier than any old cave, platonic or demystified.
Now I go to play with my dear friend, and see what future mischief it is on about.
